There is a new email scam terrifying a lot of people. The emails vary in content but for the most part they include an old password you may have used in the past. They claim they have installed malware on your computer and have access to your webcam or have been tracking your browser history and they will release what they know unless you send them Bitcoin. None of this is true, they likely obtained an old password from one of the big leaks in the past few years, databases have been stolen from LinkedIn, Yahoo, eBay, etc.. If you use the same password for everything and the password they have is an active one, you should change your passwords. Some emails have even been sent from the user’s email own email address. This can be spoofed, contact us if this has happened and we’ll help secure your email address. If you are updating your passwords, use long strong passwords, use a password manager or enable two-factor authentication on important accounts when available (especially financial accounts). Stay safe!
